
HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 37

Commemorating the passing of Lloyd Darrell Atkinson, gentleman,
public servant, legislator, farmer and friend.
Whereas, Lloyd Darrell Atkinson, known by family and friends as
"Darrell", was born October 18, 1927 on Buck Ridge, in Peniel,
Roane County, West Virginia, the son of Oma C. Atkinson and Hazel
Roberts Atkinson; and
Whereas, Young Darrell was educated in the public schools of
Roane County, West Virginia, having attended Peniel Elementary
School, a one-room schoolhouse, Spencer High School, from which he
graduated in 1945, and Glenville State College; and
Whereas, In 1945 to 1946, he served in the United States Army
as a military policeman in post-war Japan; and
Whereas, Lloyd Darrell Atkinson was the proud father of four
children, Ronald Darrell Atkinson, Jane Beth Paige, Carrie Ann
Brezinski and Randall Lloyd Atkinson and when speaking of his
children would inevitably say, "the thing I am most proud of is that I've got four good solid citizens"; and
Whereas, At the time of his death on August 29, 2000, Lloyd
Darrell Atkinson was married to Delores White Atkinson, who
survives him, and he is also survived by a stepson, Jeffrey Allen
White; and
Whereas, Lloyd Darrell Atkinson had a varied career, working in
the United States Post Office from 1950 to 1951, working as an
assistant manager and manager of Southern States Cooperative from
1951 to 1956, followed by working as a foreman at Kaiser Aluminum
at Ravenswood from 1956 until his retirement in 1982, yet he always
considered himself first and foremost to be a farmer; and
Whereas, Lloyd Darrell Atkinson began his public service by
being appointed to the Roane County Board of Education in 1967 to
fill an unexpired term of a former member and the following year
won election to the seat while subsequently serving in the House of
Delegates in 1978 and 1980 and the Roane County Commission in 1984
where he was instrumental in adopting the E-911 program; and
Whereas, Lloyd Darrell Atkinson was a dedicated public servant
who unselfishly served the best interests of his community, State
and country and his departing this life on August 29, 2000, should
not go unnoticed; therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Delegates:
That regret is hereby expressed by the members at the passing
of Lloyd Darrell Atkinson, gentleman, public servant, legislator,
farmer, friend, loving husband and devoted father; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward
a copy of this resolution to his widow, Delores Atkinson, his
children, Ronald Darrell Atkinson, Jane Beth Paige, Carrie Ann
Brezinski and Randall Lloyd Atkinson, and his stepson, Jeffrey
Allen White.
